Dr Parry Hashemi to Speak at PubSci London: The Sound of Serotonin

We're delighted to share that our very own Principal Investigator, Dr Parry Hashemi, will be the featured speaker at PubSci London on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, at The Old King's Head, London.

In her talk, "The Sound of Serotonin," Dr Hashemi will explore the fascinating science behind one of the brain's most misunderstood neurotransmitters. Moving beyond the common description of serotonin as the "happiness molecule," she will discuss the latest research into its role in mood, depression, and mental health, highlighting why the relationship is far more complex than is often portrayed.

The audience will also hear about pioneering research from the Hashemi Lab at Imperial College London, where the team has developed innovative approaches to monitor serotonin in living neurons in real time. These advances are helping researchers better understand neurotransmitter signalling and could contribute to the development of more objective approaches to diagnosing and treating depression.

One of the evening's highlights will be a demonstration of how serotonin signals can be transformed into music, offering a unique and engaging way to visualise the dynamic chemistry occurring within living cells.

Hosted by PubSci, the event is designed for everyone with an interest in science—no specialist background is required. The evening will include a 45-minute talk followed by a Q&A session, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions about neurotransmitters, brain health, and the technologies shaping the future of neuroscience.

We look forward to sharing our research with the wider community and hope to see many of you there.
